A long history of commitment to environmental leadership within the wood cased pencil industry.

California Cedar Products recognizes the importance of protecting the environment and has a long tradition of developing environmentally sound products and introducing efficient manufacturing processes that minimize waste and other damaging externalities.  The following are just a few important examples of our achievements:

  • Cal Cedar’s continued commitment to developing thin kerf sawing and other advanced wood processing technologies directly results in increased yields of pencil slats from lumber, thus conserving the Incense-cedar resource base.
  • The company’s invention of the Duraflame® firelog improved the overall utilization of wood waste fiber while providing asignificantly lower emission alternative to traditional wood burning in fireplaces.
  • While the Incense-cedar we use has always come from some of the best managed, sustainable forests in the world, ourForestChoice® products were the world’s first pencil slats and pencils to be produced from wood sourced from forests managed under comprehensive environmental and social standards developed by the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®).

The Company is very committed to supporting responsible management of the world’s forest resources. This means providing our customers with wood products that come from sustainable, well managed and legal sources while steadily increasing the proportion of total production offered as “certified wood”.  We actively participate in the leading independent third-party Chain of Custody certification programs designed to provide a verifiable tracking mechanism between certified forests and certified products.  We currently maintain Chain of Custody certification from the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC-C010858) and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes (PEFC/29-31-165). PEFC, and FSC Chain of Custody certification provides consumers with a guarantee that the products they are purchasing come from forestlands that are responsibly managed for sustainability while also giving due consideration to all forest uses.

Today, CalCedar offers FSC and/or PEFC certification on all three of our pencil slat species and our new EcoSlat® Pacific Albus®product line is our first slat species program to be offered with all production available under the FSC 100% program.
